The Lakes of Stradbroke

North Stradbroke Island has an outstanding freshwater lake system that has been listed as one of the world's most ecologically important wetlands.

Blue Lake is the perfect place to take a refreshing cold dip in the middle of summer. The best way to get to Blue Lake is a 2.5 kilometre walk from the car park located on the sealed Transaction-Island road. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to see wildlife such as forest birds, goannas and other reptiles. Careful walkers may see rare and extremely shy wildlife such as the golden wallaby.

For a different freshwater experience with more amenities, Brown Lake is easy to get to with access available for conventional vehicles. Brown Lake has picnic and BBQ areas and is just 5 minutes from Dunwich. The natural bushland surrounding the lake is home to the small ground orchids - dipodiums as well as many other delicate wildflowers.

The Keyholes is a freshwater system of mysterious lakes and lagoons which stretches over four and a half kilometres. It is a perfect spot to view the island's massive natural open-air aviary of more than 250 species of native birds.
